401contemporary is pleased to exhibit a dialogic exhibition of new works by Fiene Scharp (b. 1984, Berlin) and Ignacio Uriarte (b. 1972, Krefeld). The exhibition +/- examines artistic production as constant process of addition and subtraction, of gestural play within a tightly restricted field.

Both artists focus on paper as a medium, which develops its own organic, material presence,
no longer mere carrier materials. The formal vocabulary employed that owes its heritage to the repetitive, almost banal processes of the office environment, the slow accumulation of pen strokes and typewriter keys as a way of demarcating the passage of time, in the heritage of such conceptual artists as Hanne Darboven and On Kawara.

The artists use the formal restrictions of the medium to structure their work: the millimetre grid and linear structure, which is used as a guide of either material addition by means of typewriter, carbon paper, ball point pen - or subtraction through paper cutter and pinprick. The works are inherently anachronistic, referencing the pre-digital era when writing was still a physical act, where each mark demarcated an ineradicable expanse of time, and left physical traces on a physical carrier. In their dedication to a process based purely on physical mark-making, the works bear the traces of a very personal practice and language.

Fiene Scharp’s practice takes the grid and the series as base elements, which she either adds to by fine networks of lines, as with her carbon-paper monotypes, where her goal is, she says ‘to eradicate the carbon’. As always with manual processes, irregularities to the strict formality of the grid, injecting an organic component. Graph paper, once a staple of copyists’ and accountants’ offices is now a threatened species as the digital workspace has no requirement for a manual method of reproduction and its inherent inaccuracies. Scharp’s works thus are suspended in time, referencing a mode of labour which has similarly ceased to exist.

The “Schnitt”zeichnungen” take found exercise books from the US, Japan, Germany and other countries as their base. Using a scalpel, the artist extracts the empty spaces between the lines, thus creating another grid. Freely suspended in picture frames or on metal stands, the works evince a formal ambivalence between the sculptural and the graphic.

While Scharp’s references to the office and educational environment are material, Ignacio Uriarte takes a conceptual approach. Seriality is a cornerstone of the artist’s work: whether through the accumulation of single typewriter keys (x, y, z, %, /), or through the shading of lines in a Moleskine exercise book (“Zig Zag Transition”). Work, or the pretence of work is a key referent: Uriarte’s Bartlebian marks, his “schoolboy punishment exercises” allude to both concrete writing and the mark as scribble, hovering between meaning and decoration, writing and drawing. “Zig Zag Transition” increases this ambiguity, with the formal properties of the material lending the work a sculptural quality. Finally, the work “From A4 to A5 and Back Again” is a formal exploration of the transition between formats via a mathematical formula. Despite the restrictions of the approach, the result is a surprisingly organic, restrained, large-scale work.

Fiene Scharp (*1984, Berlin) studied art at the UdK (University of the Arts), Berlin; in 2011, she was Meisterschülerin with Gregor Schneider, and in 2012, she received the Meisterschüler Award of the President of UdK Berlin. She has participated in the exhibition “Rasterfahndung – Das Raster in der Kunst nach 1945” at the Art Museum Stuttgart in 2012. This was followed by numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and North America. Her works have been acquired by prestigious private as well as institutional collections, among them the Art Museum Stuttgart and the Graphic Collection of Berlin’s Museums (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz). This year, she was awarded the stipend from the Else-Heiliger-Fund (Konrad Adenauer Stiftung).

Ignacio Uriarte (*1972, Krefeld) commenced his artistic career in1999, having previously studied and worked in the field of business administration. In addition to his drawings, he works in the media of installation, video and audio. His works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions all around the world - most recently at the Foundation Hermès in Tokyo. His pieces have become part of collections in Spain, Italy, France, Mexico, in the USA and in Germany, where they can be found in the collections of the Berlinischen Galerie, the Graphic Collection of Berlin’s Museums (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz), the Städtischen Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich and at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, among others.

Ralf Haensel started 401contemporary in Berlin in March 2009, driven by two motivations; to provide young artists with rooms in which to exhibit, a ‘spatial’ platform, but also to offer them a ‘time’ platform, a possibility to discover a connectedness with other artists across the boundaries of time. This hologram of past and present not only steers young artists on their way forward, it also initiates new interpretations and provided important stimuli for all parties involved. - At the end of 2010, 401contemporary moved from ‘Berlin-Mitte’ to Potsdamer Strasse, one of the most flamboyant art-creating-and-trading areas of the roaring-twenties-Berlin, and today again an epicentre of the Berliner art scene.

Schliesslich ist „From A4 to A5 and Back Again“ ein praktischer Versuch, den Übergang ver-schiedener Blattformate mittels mathematischer Methoden darzustellen.
