SOUS SUR FACE offers boundless possibilities. The one certainty is that what is here and what is now is only here and now for a split second, or for as long as it takes to realize that the works presented in this exhibition point towards a ʻbeyondʼ even before they have fully allowed that which comes at first glance to be taken in.
Nothing and all is what is seems. A portrayed void is a solid mass. An image of disruption captures continuity. An object and its shadow are equally visible. A reflection of a stone quarry softens on fabric. The realities are multiple and many.

Bianca Brunnerʼs photographs explore the illusionary qualities that underlie common conceptions of perceived truth and mise en scène in the medium of photography. Focusing on the (im)materiality of the surface of an image, Brunnerʼs work highlights the potential of abstraction inherent in all objects. Her austere but elegant compositions, always created with modest materials, are realities in disguise. They show a carefully constructed environment which is an obvious reality while at the same time suggesting a disruption from the real. Gaps, disruptions, voids, these are Brunner themes, but never without the allusion to wholeness, a togetherness which may or may not lie outside the image.

In his paintings, Manuele Cerutti continuously walks a fine line between the pictorial representation of an object and its narration. A dialectic game is at play; between technique and story, between painting practice itself and the elements of narration. Language itself overlies the work with an enigmatic structure and as such determines its complex intelligibility. In Ceruttiʼs ʻstoneʼ paintings, the artist contemplates the function of the object and its shadow. Shadow here acts as negative but equal space, as the keeper of the stoneʼs ʻbeyondʼ surface and as such plays a role which is as pivotal as that of the object itself.

Nadja Frankʼs installation Devil in The Details is a further exploration of the work she started in a marble quarry in Carrara, Italy, in the summer of 2010. Fascinated by the strong visual reality of the juxtaposition of the forces of nature and man which the quarry offers, both in form and colour, Frank has used this ʻthree dimensional canvasʼ as her prime source of material and inspiration. Through this continuous dialogue, Frank has reached a stage where the quarry has become an interpreter as much as a subject, a bearer of many truths. Especially for this exhibition, the artist has created an installation which respects and acknowledges the monumentality of the marble while at the same time rendering it delicate and soft as its fabric support gently drapes from the wall.
